Preparing for your first goalkeeper camp: a parent's guide
Kit list, mindset, hydration, sleep: everything you need to know before your child's first camp.
The first goalkeeper camp is a milestone. For many children, it is the first time they train several days in a row alongside other goalkeepers. Here is how to approach it calmly.
Essential kit
- Two pairs of gloves (a backup, kept dry)
- Long-sleeved jersey + padded shorts for diving
- High socks and shin pads
- 1L water bottle + a snack
- Sun cream and a cap for outdoor sessions
The right mindset
A camp is not an exam. Your child will not be graded or compared. The goal is to progress, meet other goalkeepers, and enjoy themselves. Coaches are there to support, not to judge.
If your child is anxious the night before, remind them:
- Every goalkeeper present is at the same level of uncertainty.
- Coaches will adapt drills to their level.
- A tough day is not a failure, it is a learning day.
Hydration and sleep
A tired goalkeeper gets injured. Aim for 9 to 10 hours of sleep the night before and during the camp. Hydration: at least 1.5 L of water per day, more in hot weather. Avoid sugary drinks that cause energy crashes at the end of sessions.
The drive home
After each day, take 5 minutes to listen to your child tell you about their day, without correcting or pointing out mistakes. The technical debrief belongs to the coach. You are the emotional anchor.
Have a great camp, and welcome to the academy 🥅
